Projects

Radio Astronomy Project: We are working with Dr. Yancy Shirley to observe about 90 Planck Cold Cores using the Arizona Radio Observatory 12m telescope on Kitt Peak. The meeting time is 5:00pm on Tuesdays. If you would like to be a part of this project, please contact Mandy at awalker7 @ email . arizona . edu.

Binocular Telescope Project: We have secured two 10″ f/4.5 mirrors from Celestron. We have also purchased two 2.5″ secondary mirrors. We are currently working on structure design and we are seeking additional funding to complete this project. Our meeting time is 1pm on Mondays. If you would like to be a part of this project, please contact Blythe at bguvenen @ email . arizona . edu.

Extrasolar Planet Project: Over the summer of 2009, we gathered data on extrasolar planets TrES-3b and TrES-4b. We are now completing the data reduction process and writing proposals for observing time to follow up our observations to complete our data set. Our meeting time is 5:00pm every Thursday. If you would like to be a part of this project, please contact Jake at turner @ email . arizona . edu.

Local Astronomical Phenomena Project: We have completed 4 local star models; two of which are in use at the Mount Lemmon SkyCenter, one which currently resides in the Steward Observatory lobby, and one which we take to educational outreach events.  Additional projects in the planning stages are the Local Group of Galaxies, and Globular Clusters in our Galaxy. If you have any ideas for this project or would like to help out, contact Ali at ammcgraww @ gmail . com.

Educational Outreach: We are always seeking out ways to educate the public about astronomy. Throughout the year we host star parties, participate in College of Science events, help out at local schools, and many other events. If you would like more information about participating in our educational outreach, or if you would like us to come to your school or event, please contact Allison at towner @ email . arizona . edu.

The meeting time for this project is 5pm on Wednesdays.

Star Parties: Throughout the year we host star parties at various locations. We hold a regular FREE star party for the public at the Sabino Canyon Visitor Center every first Saturday of each month from 5:30-9pm, weather permitting. We safely look at the sun through telescopes with filters until sunset, at which time we look at other astronomical phenomena and track satellites as they cross the sky. Join us for the monthly event, and if you have questions, contact Allison at towner @ email . arizona . edu.

NASA Image of the Day

The Engine Burns Blue

This image shows a cutting-edge solar-electric propulsion thruster in development at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., that uses xenon ions for propulsion. An earlier version of this solar-electric propulsion engine has been flying on NASA's Dawn mission to the asteroid belt. This engine is being considered as part of the Asteroid Initiative, a proposal to robotically capture a small near-Earth asteroid and redirect it safely to a stable orbit in the Earth-moon system where astronauts can visit and explore it. This image was taken through a porthole in a vacuum chamber at JPL where the ion engine is being tested. Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech
